Diplomatic pressure after negotiation failure

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued an order for the Iranian delegation to the United Nations to immediately leave the territory of the United States. This measure was a consequence of the fact that negotiations between Washington and Tehran had reached a dead end.

Timeline of events on 28 September

According to sources, the decision to expel was made on the evening of Monday, 28 September. Representatives of the US mission to the UN officially informed the Iranian side that their delegation must immediately leave New York. Among the members of the delegation who were in the US was Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The order was carried out quite quickly: within a few hours, Iranian diplomats headed to the airport and flew from New York towards Doha.

Official justification and real reasons

According to a US official, Rubio effectively “expelled” the Iranian delegation. As explained in Washington, the UN General Assembly session had already concluded, so there was no basis for the continued presence of Iranian representatives on US territory.

Meanwhile, another source noted that Abbas Araghchi had planned to return to Tehran that same evening, 28 September, regardless of the order.
