Official IWF decision on holding the competition in Moscow

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced that the World Championship in this Olympic sport will take place in Russia in 2030. This will be the first event of such scale to be hosted on Russian territory since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A step towards integrating Russian sport into the global system

According to the French publication Le Monde, the adoption of such a decision could become another step towards the gradual return of Russian sport to the international arena.

Context: changes in the position of the International Olympic Committee

Earlier, in May of this year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. Subsequently, on 7 July, the IOC removed restrictions on Russian athletes, allowing them to participate in team disciplines and qualifying tournaments for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles.

Unresolved issue of symbolism

Meanwhile, as Le Monde notes, the question of whether Russian athletes can use the national flag and anthem during international competitions remains open.
