Threat to the global network

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in the PHP programming language, which forms the basis for creating many web pages. According to Reuters, this issue could allow malicious actors to gain unauthorised access to site systems and compromise them. PHP is widely used to generate the content that users view in their browsers.

Government response

Citing the high risk of cyberattacks, the governments of the Netherlands and Finland have already decided to take their government websites and online services offline.

Limited fix

Developers have promised to release a security patch on 21 October 2026. However, it is noted that the update will be available exclusively for the latest versions of PHP. This means that thousands of outdated services may remain unprotected.

If appropriate updates are not developed for these systems or if they are not modernised, they risk ceasing to function.
