Water supply dependence on the power grid
Serhiy Horkutsenko, Deputy General Director of Kyivvodokanal, emphasised the critical dependence of the water supply system on the availability of electricity. According to him, without external power supply, the enterprise is unable to provide centralised water delivery. As the official summarised: «Не буде електрики — не буде води» (No electricity — no water).
Scenarios during prolonged outages
Horkutsenko explained the mechanism of infrastructure operation in the event of 20-hour outages. In such a scenario, water would be supplied to consumers exclusively at the moments when power is restored. Meanwhile, he noted, the sewage system is planned to be kept in working order even in the absence of electricity.
Status of backup power in the capital
Previously, on 9 October, the Kyiv City State Administration informed about the presence of approximately 700 generators at heat and water supply facilities. However, the city administration acknowledged that these units primarily provide low power output. For the operation of key pump stations, separate diesel power plants or cogeneration units are required.
Some projects for installing such equipment have already been implemented, and the completion of the remaining works is promised by the end of the year. Thus, despite the presence of hundreds of generators, the capital currently lacks guaranteed autonomous power for the entire water supply system in the event of a prolonged blackout.
