Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms has won the election for the office of Governor of the State of Georgia. This result is historic: she has become the first Black woman in the US to be elected to this position, as well as the first female governor in Georgia's history.
Voting results and opponents
According to Reuters, Bottoms defeated her Republican opponent, Rick Jackson. The winner previously served as Mayor of Atlanta and worked as an advisor to US President Joe Biden.
Bottoms's victory will bring an end to more than two decades of Republican control over the governorship in Georgia. Incumbent Governor Brian Kemp will leave office after completing his second full term.
Historical context
Keisha Lance Bottoms is the third Black woman nominated by the Democratic Party for the office of Governor of Georgia. Previous attempts included the candidacy of Stacey Abrams, who participated in the 2018 and 2022 election campaigns but lost both times.
