Tehran has confirmed the relevance of its proposal to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, if Washington fulfils the established conditions, the strait could be opened within six days. The day after this process, the parties may resume negotiations.
Washington's reaction and current state of negotiations
As Araghchi noted, the United States has already transmitted its comments on the Iranian initiative, which are currently being analysed in Tehran. The minister emphasised that further developments depend on the American side's willingness to comply with Iran's demands.
Last week, a representative of the Iranian government stated that negotiations had reached a dead end because the US had not taken into account all seven of Tehran's conditions regarding the opening of the strait.
Key demands of Tehran
Among the main conditions put forward by Iran are:
- the lifting of the blockade of Iranian ports;
- the removal of sanctions restricting the export of Iranian oil;
- the cessation of hostilities on all fronts in the region.
Nuclear programme as a point of contention
One of the main points of disagreement remains the issue of Iran's nuclear programme. Washington insists that this matter be discussed from the very beginning of the negotiation process. US Vice President JD Vance previously stated that Tehran must significantly reduce its uranium enrichment capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Iranian side proposes first focusing on the restoration of shipping and ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz.
