Why airlines deny boarding: passport validity rules abroad

Even if the validity period of a passport has not yet expired, a passenger may be denied boarding. This situation arises due to specific requirements of certain states, which demand an additional buffer of document validity. This means that when planning a trip, checking the passport expiry date at the time of departure is insufficient.

Differences in document requirements

The aim of such restrictions is to prevent cases where a foreigner is forced to stay in the country due to unforeseen circumstances, while their passport loses validity. Since there are no unified international standards regarding the minimum validity buffer, each country determines its own rules, which may depend on the traveller's citizenship.

Ukrainians preparing for a trip should carefully study the requirements of the destination country:

  • Schengen Area: the passport must be valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the territory.
  • Turkey: the document must be valid for at least 150 days from the date of arrival.
  • USA: for Ukrainian citizens, it is sufficient for the passport validity period to cover the entire planned stay.
  • Egypt: the document must remain valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Thus, a passport that meets the criteria for one trip may not be suitable for another.

The role of airlines in document checks

Control over the compliance of documents with the requirements of the destination country is carried out not only by border guards but also by airline representatives during check-in. For this purpose, airline staff use the specialised information system IATA Timatic, which contains up-to-date data on entry rules and required documents.

Airlines carefully check passengers because transporting a person who does not meet entry conditions can lead to financial sanctions. The carrier will have to pay a fine and organise the traveller's return at its own expense. That is why refusal of carriage can occur even at the departure airport, even if the passport is formally valid.

When it is worth replacing a passport

To avoid problems before departure, experts recommend checking the requirements of a specific country in advance. If less than a year remains until the document's expiry date, it is advisable to consider the possibility of replacing it, especially if an international trip is planned in the near future.

Ukrainian legislation allows citizens to simultaneously hold two valid passports. This makes it possible to issue a new document before the previous one expires. Each of these documents has its own validity period, so the expiry of one does not affect the other.
