US proposes keeping backyard chickens

In her view, this would help reduce household food costs and decrease reliance on major suppliers.

While authorities are urging the public to engage in backyard poultry farming, the Department of Agriculture (DOGE) is cutting staff responsible for monitoring animal epidemics. The layoffs affect molecular biologists and sanitary inspectors – precisely those involved in preventing and combating viruses that threaten agricultural poultry.

Egg prices have risen nearly fivefold

The problem faced by Americans is directly linked to avian flu outbreaks that have wiped out millions of hens on farms across the country. Over the past year, the cost of a dozen eggs has increased from $2.52 to $12, and prices continue to climb.
