Daily updates on Francis's condition
The Vatican has broken a tradition for the first time in centuries – since 14 February, the Holy See press office has been providing daily details on the health of Pope Francis, who has been hospitalised with bilateral pneumonia.

Abandoning traditional silence
As Reuters notes, throughout the history of the Vatican, the health of popes has remained a closed topic. Any discussion was considered inappropriate, let alone public statements. However, Francis, known for his open communication style, personally ordered that the details not be hidden.

What is known about the Pope's illness
The Vatican press office not only confirms the fact of hospitalisation but also publishes information about the treatment:
High-flow oxygen therapy – the Pope is receiving a higher concentration of oxygen.
Blood transfusion – the need for this was caused by a deterioration in his condition.
Respiratory crisis – doctors compare it to severe asthma attacks.

Francis's personal oversight
According to Reuters, the pontiff personally asked the doctors not to hide the details of his condition and to share updates with the world. In the first days of his hospitalisation, he himself helped edit the press releases to ensure people received honest information about his health.
