Ukraine risks being left without HIV medication

The decision by the Donald Trump administration to suspend foreign aid in the fight against HIV could lead to an acute shortage of life-saving drugs in eight countries, including Ukraine. 

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), such measures jeopardise the achievements of the last two decades in the fight against the spread of the infection.

Global consequences of funding cuts

According to expert estimates, halting the supply of antiretroviral drugs could lead to ten million new HIV infections and cause approximately three million deaths. In addition to Ukraine, a critical situation will arise in seven other countries, where patients living with the virus may be left without necessary treatment.

Destruction of long-term progress

The WHO warns: if HIV response programmes are put at risk, the world could lose 20 years of progress in this area.
