Pope Francis hospitalised

The Vatican has officially confirmed the hospitalisation of 87-year-old Pope Francis. According to the Holy See, the pontiff was taken to Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on 14 February for diagnostic tests. The reason was a flare-up of a respiratory tract infection, accompanied by a high fever.

Illness and emergency clinic visit

As clarified by the Vatican, the decision to hospitalise him was made after a morning working meeting between the pontiff and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"His Holiness requires a series of necessary tests to continue treatment for bronchitis", — the official statement reads.

It is noted that treatment for the respiratory tract infection has been ongoing for several days, and the deterioration in his condition occurred even before the talks with the Slovak politician.

Pontiff’s condition under control

This is not the first time Pope Francis has been hospitalised. Last year, he underwent treatment at the same clinic, and in 2021, he had intestinal surgery. Despite frequent health problems, he continues to carry out part of his duties.

Currently, doctors assess his condition as stable, although it is not yet known how long the pontiff will remain in hospital.
