German Defence Ministry ends use of social media platform X

The German Defence Ministry has decided to cease active use of the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk. However, the ministry reserves the right to publish messages on the platform in "exceptional cases".

As stated by representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany's Defence Ministry on its official website, this decision applies not only to the ministry's own channel on X, but also to the channels of the Inspector General, the ministry's departments, and the Bundeswehr's central channel.

The ministry cited the main reason for ending active use of the platform as difficulties in exchanging arguments and information. "We have concluded that the exchange of views on this network is becoming increasingly difficult," the statement reads.

To inform the public about appointments, ministry news, and other important matters, the German Defence Ministry has decided to use alternative channels, including WhatsApp. The use of other platforms for disseminating information, such as Instagram and YouTube, will also continue.

The ministry emphasised that social media cannot fully meet all of the ministry's communication needs, and that it will use various formats and channels in the future to ensure transparency and broad public engagement.
