Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney secured a decisive victory in the Liberal Party leadership election, winning 85.9% of the vote. This result paves the way for him to become the country's Prime Minister, a post previously held by Justin Trudeau.

New course and challenges

In his first speech following the victory, Carney outlined the key challenges facing Canada. He emphasised that future relations with the United States will require decisive action. Specifically, he warned that confronting a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House would demand "extraordinary efforts" from Canada («чрезвычайных усилий»).

Policy towards the US

Carney assured that Canada would remain a sovereign nation and would never become part of the United States. He also stated his intention to maintain existing trade tariffs on American goods until Washington demonstrates respect for Ottawa's economic interests.
