Romanian presidential candidate faces up to 20 years in prison

Charges of subverting the constitutional order
Călin Georgescu, who won the first round of the annulled presidential election in Romania, has become the subject of a criminal investigation. The Prosecutor General's Office has brought a series of charges against the politician, the main one being incitement to subvert the constitutional order.

Judicial oversight and restrictions
A court has banned Georgescu from leaving the country for 60 days and imposed strict restrictions:

• a ban on public appearances and creating social media accounts,
• a ban on carrying weapons,
• an obligation to report regularly to the police and notify them of any change of residence.Other charges

In addition to incitement, the politician is also suspected of spreading false information and supporting fascist organisations, as well as aiding individuals who committed crimes against humanity.

Georgescu's reaction
Despite the serious charges, Georgescu himself describes the situation as political repression and compares it to the methods of the communist regime of the 1950s.

"Румыния не станет на колени. Мы продолжим борьбу за свободу" ("Romania will not kneel. We will continue the fight for freedom"), the politician said in an interview with News.ro.
