Canada and Mexico announce retaliatory tariffs on US goods

Canada and Mexico have announced the introduction of retaliatory tariffs on American imports in response to the US decision to tighten its tariff policy.

A decree was previously signed, stipulating that new tariffs would take effect from 4 February: 10% on Chinese goods, 25% on Mexican goods, 10% on Canadian energy resources and 25% on other goods.

How did Ottawa and Mexico City respond?

Canada introduced 25% tariffs on US imports worth $106bn. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasised the need to support domestic producers and develop the internal market.

Mexico stated that it may adopt both tariff and non-tariff measures against the US. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed readiness for negotiations but stressed that the country intends to protect its economic interests.

China intends to file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization regarding the tariffs imposed by the United States. The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China reported this, emphasising that Beijing will also take retaliatory measures commensurate with the scale of the restrictions.
