EU introduces 16th sanctions package against Russia: ban on aluminium, gaming consoles and "shadow fleet"

European Union countries have agreed on a new package of sanctions measures aimed at Russia. The restrictions will cover aluminium imports, video game console sales, and will also affect dozens of vessels involved in circumventing sanctions.

Aluminium ban with a one-year delay

One of the key points of the new package will be the gradual introduction of a ban on primary aluminium purchases. A full blockade of this raw material is planned with a one-year delay, to allow European companies time to restructure their supply chains.

Gaming consoles and "shadow fleet" under fire

The EU will also ban the sale of video game consoles to Russia. According to experts, such goods can be used for dual purposes, including military developments.

In addition, 73 vessels of the so-called "shadow fleet" will be added to the sanctions list; these are used to circumvent existing sanctions, particularly for oil transportation.

New restrictions on media, banks and chemical products

As part of the 16th package, the European Union is introducing a ban on the broadcasting of eight Russian media outlets within the EU. In addition, 13 Russian banks and companies involved in servicing oil refining and gas plants will be subject to sanctions.

The EU is also introducing restrictions on the export of chrome and a number of chemical substances that can be used in industry and the defence sector.

When will the sanctions take effect?

Final approval of the sanctions package is expected on Monday, which marks another anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The decision must undergo final coordination and official ratification by EU representatives.
