EU warns of dangers of flights over Russian airspace: new EASA recommendations

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a new Conflict Zone Information Bulletin concerning the airspace of the Russian Federation. 

This step is aimed at ensuring maximum flight safety in the context of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The new document replaces previous recommendations and significantly expands their scope. According to the bulletin, EASA recommends avoiding flights in Russian airspace west of 60° East longitude, regardless of flight altitude. This recommendation applies to both European carriers and foreign operators holding EASA safety certification.

Validity period and situation monitoring
The recommendation will remain in effect until 31 July 2025, although it may be reviewed earlier depending on changes in the situation. EASA, together with the European Commission, continues to closely monitor the situation to promptly assess risks for operators from the EU and third countries operating flights to or from Europe.

Flights at risk
It should be noted that no airline from the European Union currently operates flights in, through, or out of Russian airspace. However, carriers from certain third countries continue to use these routes despite the heightened risks caused by the armed conflict.
