Initiative to ban funding of Russian energy
On 16 October, Gregory Meeks, a senior member of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, introduced a bipartisan bill. The document's primary objective is to block the agreement reached between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin regarding the purchase and import of Russian diesel fuel.
This information was published on the official website of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Key provisions of the document
The bill, titled "Prohibit Corrupt Russia Oil Deals Act", includes a series of strict measures:
- A ban on the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) making investments in the Russian energy sector.
- The revocation of general licences issued by the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
- A prohibition on issuing new licences of this kind in the future.
- An obligation for the Trump administration to impose sanctions on the Russian energy sector.
Initiator's position
Gregory Meeks emphasised that the deal with Russia will not lead to reduced costs for American citizens. According to him, they are already paying for the failed war that, in the congressman's view, Trump started in Iran. Instead, Meeks noted, this deal will bring Putin millions of dollars and allow Russia to continue killing civilians in Ukraine.
"At a time when the United States should be increasing pressure on the Kremlin, Donald Trump is playing games with Putin and making deals for his own enrichment instead of supporting Ukraine. This contradicts the very principles that the United States upholds. Congress must act. Every congressman who claims to be outraged must support this bill," Meeks said.
