EU ready to take on leadership role in place of US

The European Union has expressed its readiness to assume a leading role in providing assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, Brussels hopes that the policy of supporting the Ukrainian people will be continued by the United States, even after Donald Trump comes to power.

This was stated by the head of the EU's diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, whose words are quoted by Politico.

«Я уверена, что все страны-члены ЕС готовы продолжать поддержку Украины. Мы также надеемся, что Соединенные Штаты не откажутся от своей помощи. Однако если этого не произойдет, Европейский Союз готов взять на себя роль лидера в этом вопросе» (I am confident that all EU member states are ready to continue supporting Ukraine. We also hope that the United States will not withdraw its assistance. However, if that does not happen, the European Union is ready to take on the role of leader in this matter), Kallas emphasised.

According to her, Europe should not speculate about the future policy of the US, but it is important to understand that stability in the region and the containment of Russia are in America's interests. «Сильная Россия не отвечает стратегическим интересам Соединенных Штатов и мирового порядка в целом» (A strong Russia does not serve the strategic interests of the United States and the global order as a whole), the diplomat added.

Kallas's statement reflects growing concern within the EU regarding a possible shift in Washington's foreign policy course, which could affect the balance of power and the level of support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
