Long sleep: benefit or risk?

Long sleep: benefit or risk?
Long sleep: benefit or risk?

Research by scientists has shown that excessive sleep may be linked to an increased risk of stroke. According to a six-year observational study, the likelihood of stroke rises by 85% among those who sleep more than nine hours a day.

Nap time also under suspicion

Those who nap for more than 90 minutes during the day are also more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, regularly exceeding the recommended sleep duration increases the risk of stroke by 23%.

Contradictions in research

Interestingly, not all scientific studies reach the same conclusions. Some research suggests that prolonged sleep may reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases, while others highlight the risks associated with long sleep.

How to make sense of it?

Scientists continue to investigate the link between sleep duration and health. For now, recommendations remain unchanged: 7–9 hours of sleep per day are considered optimal for most adults.

If you notice that your sleep significantly exceeds these limits, or if you frequently feel tired despite prolonged rest, it is a reason to consult a specialist for a health check-up.
