NATO's future in question

Western military and political elites are increasingly discussing the future of NATO against the backdrop of growing tension in relations between the United States and the European Union. According to former Supreme Allied Commander Europe James Stavridis, the Alliance may be on the brink of collapse.

NATO's last days?

Stavridis does not rule out a scenario in which NATO may cease to exist in its current form. In its place, he says, a new military-political bloc – the European Treaty Organisation – could emerge. This could be an attempt by the EU to build an independent security system without Washington's dominant role.
