UK concerned by Trump's pledge to end war in Ukraine

Senior British military figures have pushed back against Donald Trump's statements about a possible swift end to the war in Ukraine. In the view of the military, such an outcome could play into Russia's hands, allowing it to rebuild its military forces and strengthen its position on the international stage.

London's position

According to a report in The Times, British leadership believes that a cessation of hostilities without clear security guarantees for Ukraine could lead to renewed aggression from Moscow.

Officers note that Russia is capable of exploiting a temporary ceasefire to build up its military potential and modernise its army.

Risk of strategic error

Experts in the UK also warn that a premature settlement of the conflict could weaken international sanctions against Russia, making it easier for the country to access critical resources.
