The animated series "Arcane" became a standout event in the world of animation, but it turned out to be financially underwhelming for Riot Games. Despite phenomenal popularity and rave reviews, the project, which had a record budget of $250 million, resulted in losses for the company.
The problem was that the show failed to attract new players to League of Legends and did not incentivise the game's dedicated fans to make active in-game purchases, such as skins. Riot Games shareholders even raised questions about the feasibility of filming a second season, but a decision had already been made, and the team continued working on the project.
Interestingly, the creators of "Arcane" themselves did not anticipate such a resounding success. This meant they simply did not have time to prepare additional marketing products for the premiere, including exclusive skins that could have been a significant source of revenue. As a result, the company missed the opportunity to derive commercial benefit from the show's popularity.
"Arcane" remains a benchmark for high-quality animation and an engaging plot, but its story is a vivid example of how even the most successful creative projects can face financial difficulties when their monetisation strategy is insufficiently well thought out.
