Suspect's statements in BBC interview
Vitaliy Zhikovych, who is suspected of involvement in the murder of Anastasiya Berezovska, gave an extensive interview to the BBC. The conversation took place from a Kyiv pre-trial detention centre. Zhikovych claims that Berezovska, who is identified as the executor of the assassination attempt on businessman Vadym Ermolaev in Monaco, could have planted an explosive device.
The man describes his status as a "freelancer" for the Security Service of Ukraine. At the same time, he calls Berezovska his "agent". Previously, the SBU stated that Zhikovych was their former employee.
Role of leadership and the "boss"
Zhikovych refers to another suspect in the case, Vladyslav Reut, as the "boss". According to Zhikovych, the operation itself was approved by the leadership of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR).
However, despite the connection with the GUR, Reut, who managed the process, stated to Zhikovych at a certain stage that the operation was not "authorised". The operation manager explained that the murder of Ermolaev was ordered from the "civilian side".
Motive: financing the annexation
Media had previously speculated that the attempt was linked to Ermolaev's involvement in fraudulent call centres, although the businessman himself denied this. Zhikovych refutes this version.
He claims that the attempt was carried out due to "financing the annexation of Crimea". According to Zhikovych, this information was provided to him by Reut. This implies that Ermolaev likely paid taxes to Russia through his business in occupied Crimea.
Second target in the case
Zhikovych added that there were two priority targets in the case. The second was a "pro-Russian blogger who was tried in absentia by Ukraine last year on charges of treason".
