Washington has officially imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Donald Trump administration cites the primary objective of these measures as depriving the institution of necessary resources and limiting its operational capabilities. In the US, it is emphasised that such actions are aimed at preventing the prosecution of American citizens, while the restrictions may extend to companies providing services to the court.

Washington's position

The implementation of new restrictions was reported by the Reuters agency. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will ban any cooperation with the ICC. According to him, this decision aims to significantly reduce the institution's financial and other resources, which, in the view of the American side, will limit its ability to perform its functions.

International Criminal Court's reaction

Deputy Prosecutor of the ICC Najat Shamim Khan condemned the introduction of sanctions. She emphasised that these measures will not stop the court's activities and will not affect its work.

Causes of the conflict

As noted by Reuters, tensions between the US and the ICC have been ongoing for a long time. The main cause is the arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, issued by the court. In addition, Washington previously expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation into the actions of US military personnel in Afghanistan, which the ICC subsequently closed.
