Regular payments for an illusion of safety

A Ukrainian family living in Poland has faced unexpected financial consequences. For several years, they transferred funds monthly for mandatory civil liability insurance (OC) for their car, receiving documents from a broker confirming the existence of a policy. However, it later emerged that the vehicle had effectively been uninsured since mid-2024.

History of purchase and choice of insurer

As a reader who contacted the editorial team with this story and sent the relevant documents explained, the family bought the car in 2022 for approximately 2,000 US dollars. This happened six months after the start of the full-scale invasion. Initially, the owners used the car, relying on the previous owner's active insurance.

After the term of the other person's policy expired, an acquaintance recommended contacting a specific broker who had previously processed documents for him and other individuals. Since the family was waiting for the war to end and had no intention of staying in Poland for long, they chose to take out insurance for one month.

Details of the deception and service costs

The broker sent the family policies every month. Initially, the cost of the service was 80 zloty, but the price later increased, most often reaching 125 zloty. According to the woman, in 2022 and 2023, as well as in the first half of 2024, the situation seemed normal. Her husband checked the data in the electronic cabinet, where the insurance was listed as valid.

Fines from the UFG fund

In September 2025, the family received a letter from UFG, the fund responsible for collecting fines for driving without OC. For 2025, they were required to pay 9,330 zloty. The letter stated that the car was not insured, and since the gap in insurance exceeded 14 days, the fine was charged in full.

It is worth noting that in 2025, the car belonged to the family only in January, and it was sold in February. Despite this, the fund assessed total fines amounting to over 17,000 zloty (9,330 and 8,496 zloty), which the owners had to pay themselves.
