The diplomatic mission of Ukraine in India has once again addressed the relevant authorities of Nepal with a note regarding the procedure for officially documenting cases of death of individuals whose bodies could not be found or identified. These measures are linked to the Nepali side initiating procedures for the legal declaration of missing persons as deceased, among whom are 56 Ukrainian citizens.
Scale of tragedy and status of searches
As reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the latest data from competent Nepali authorities, the number of fatalities resulting from the natural disaster has risen to 1,455 people. A further 5,285 people are considered missing. In China, the death of 43 people has been confirmed, while 519 people, including 261 foreigners, remain unaccounted for.
«Цифри свідчать, що це жахливе стихійне лихо призвело до трагедії небачених масштабів - зникнення майже шести тисяч людей, зокрема й іноземних туристів, серед яких 56 наших співвітчизників. На жаль, попри багатотижневі зусилля дипломатів, консулів, рятувальників, їх досі не знайдено ані серед загиблих, ані серед постраждалих» (The figures indicate that this terrible natural disaster led to a tragedy of unprecedented scale - the disappearance of nearly six thousand people, including foreign tourists, among whom are 56 of our compatriots. Unfortunately, despite weeks of efforts by diplomats, consuls, and rescuers, they have not yet been found among either the dead or the injured), the ministry stated.
The MFA emphasised that the Nepali government's announcement of the completion of the 40-day active search and rescue operation does not mean the cessation of searches. Rescue services continue their work on searching for and identifying remains.
Pre-trial investigation and DNA database
The National Police of Ukraine is continuing the pre-trial investigation. The formation of a database of DNA profiles of relatives of the missing is currently being finalised, which is planned to be handed over to the foreign side for further identification.
According to the MFA press service, the situation is under the special control of the ministry, the Department of Consular Service, as well as the embassies of Ukraine in India and the People's Republic of China.
