Quarantine restrictions have been introduced in Shelekhov (Irkutsk region, Russia) following the death of a 28-year-old woman. Nearly 200 contacts have been placed under medical surveillance, while local authorities continue to avoid officially announcing the diagnosis, despite the situation resembling an outbreak of a particularly dangerous infection.
The woman died in the early hours of 2 October at the Shelekhov District Hospital. According to Deutsche Welle, Buryatia head Alexey Tsydenov confirmed that plague was the cause of death. Russian media name the deceased as Darya Shipilova. She worked as a laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, although details regarding her work and the circumstances of infection vary across different sources.
Following the incident, 197 individuals who had contact with the deceased were identified. 189 of them were hospitalised: 114 are in one hospital, 63 in another, and 12 were sent to the anti-plague institute. Since 1 October, the Shelekhov District Hospital has been operating under quarantine mode: admissions and discharges have been suspended in some departments.

However, the specific name of the disease has not been publicly stated at the regional authority level.
The British publication The Sun suggests that Moscow may be hiding the true scale of the problem. Journalists cite comments from epidemiologist Mikhail Favorov, who notes that it has not been officially confirmed that the case involves the pulmonary form of plague.
Russian media have spread information that on 25 September, Shipilova may have broken a test tube containing the pathogen of pulmonary plague. However, official agencies have not confirmed this version. Expert Mikhail Favorov considers such a scenario unlikely, as employees of anti-plague institutions are required to wear special protective clothing.
In the expert's opinion, if the woman did indeed have pulmonary plague, in the initial stage she could have been mistaken for a patient with pneumonia or COVID-19, creating a risk for those around her. Currently, there are no new confirmed cases of infection among contacts, which distinguishes the current situation from a full-scale epidemic.
Information uncertainty has already begun to affect the daily lives of residents. At the Irkutsk Aluminium Plant in Shelekhov, employees have been switched to a mask-wearing regime. The enterprise director, Artem Fominikh, explained that rumours are spreading around the situation, so they decided to strengthen prevention. He added that all contacts of the deceased have been identified, and their tests yielded negative results.
