The Ministry of Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine is developing comprehensive measures for the additional security of bridge crossings in the capital. The planned actions include the installation of anti-drone nets and other overhead equipment.
Strengthening physical protection of infrastructure
Mykola Kalashnyk, Ukraine's Minister of Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport, stated the intention to install anti-drone nets and other overhead equipment on the bridges. He provided this information in an interview with Suspilne.
According to the head of the ministry, experience from frontline regions demonstrates the effectiveness of such solutions. The current task is to implement similar protective mechanisms within Kyiv as quickly as possible.
«Пасивний захист можливий. Ми знаємо приклади прифронтових регіонів, як це відбувалося і будувалося там. Треба тепер зробити це максимально швидко в місті Києві. Частина об’єктів дійсно вже є з відповідним прикриттям — ППО, РЕБ, РЕР для того, щоб унеможливити влучання. Насправді відсоток відбитих ворожих цілей дуже високий. Але щось через масованість атак продовжує долітати. Тому і фізичний захист буде активно виконуватися» (Passive protection is possible. We know examples from frontline regions of how this was done and built there. We now need to do this as quickly as possible in the city of Kyiv. Some facilities already have appropriate cover — air defence, electronic warfare, and electronic reconnaissance to prevent hits. In fact, the percentage of repelled enemy targets is very high. But due to the mass nature of the attacks, something continues to get through. Therefore, physical protection will also be actively implemented), says Kalashnyk.
Effectiveness of existing air defence systems
The minister noted that current air defence, electronic warfare, and electronic reconnaissance systems already provide a high level of repelling enemy attacks. However, due to the mass nature of the strikes, some drones still break through, making the implementation of additional barriers necessary.
Kalashnyk added that completely destroying a bridge structure using a drone is an extremely difficult task. Nevertheless, for complete safety, it is planned to combine physical protection with further strengthening of air defence systems.
