Diplomatic protest over satellite internet

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially protested to Norway over what Tehran claims is the unauthorised operation of the Starlink satellite internet service within the country's territory. In this regard, the Norwegian ambassador was summoned to Tehran and handed an official note of protest.

Allegations of violating international norms

Iranian officials accused the United States and Israel of using the Starlink satellite system to "interfere" in Iran's affairs. Tehran also stated that Norway is failing to meet its obligations as the country responsible for registering the Starlink satellite network with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

According to the Iranian side, ITU Council decisions oblige Norway to take measures to prevent the unauthorised transmission of Starlink signals within Iranian territory.

Demands on the Norwegian side

Iranian officials are demanding that Oslo immediately take steps to cease Starlink operations, which they view as a direct violation of Iran's national sovereignty and security.

Context: detentions and equipment seizure

In March, Iranian authorities reported the detention of 30 individuals accused of spying for Israel and the United States. Iranian security forces also claimed to have seized weapons and Starlink terminals from them.
