Rebrov – top contender for Hungary manager post

According to the Hungarian publication Magyar Nemzet, citing sources close to the Hungarian Football Federation, Sergiy Rebrov is the main candidate for the position of head coach of the Hungary national team. This position may become vacant following the resignation of the current manager, Marco Rossi.

As noted by Hungarian journalists, the candidacy of the 52-year-old Ukrainian specialist was approved as the first contender back in May this year. Since then, Rebrov has declined several job offers from clubs, including Kyiv's Dynamo and teams from the Far East. The main motivation for these decisions was the desire to wait for a possible appointment by the Hungarian Football Federation.

Experience in Hungary and attitude towards the national team

Rebrov has previously repeatedly emphasised his readiness to work with the Hungarian national team. He is well remembered in Hungary for his time managing Ferencvaros between 2018 and 2021. Under his leadership, the team won domestic trophies and reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history.

Crisis in the national team and hints of Rossi's resignation

The current head coach of the Hungary national team, Marco Rossi, is in the position under a contract that runs until 2030. However, following a poor start in the Nations League, the Italian hinted at the possibility of resigning. The Hungarian team had a progressive start to the tournament: they first lost to the Ukraine national team 0-1 at home, and then drew 0-0 with Northern Ireland.

On the eve of the match in Belfast, Rossi stated that the team has been plagued by constant failures since the European Championship. He compared the situation to a saying about Napoleon, who chose generals not for their strategic talent, but for how lucky they were. According to the coach, given the long run of bad luck, "someone should make a decision".

Possible debut clash with Ukraine

Hungarian media do not rule out the possibility that Marco Rossi may not manage the next two Nations League matches. On 2 October, the Hungary national team will host Georgia at home, and on 5 October, they will play against the Ukraine national team.

If the change of coach happens in time, Sergiy Rebrov could theoretically take the field against the team he managed just a few months ago.
