US senators demand Trump revoke Russian diesel import waiver

US President Donald Trump's decision to allow the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the American market grossly violates current legislation. This was stated by seven senators from the Democratic and Republican parties in a joint appeal.

Violation of 2022 law

Congress explicitly banned the import of Russian energy carriers back in 2022. The aim of this step was to prevent American money from being used to finance the war that Vladimir Putin unleashed against Ukraine.

The statement emphasises that the presidential administration not only ignores this ban but also failed to consult with legislators. Officials also provided no explanations to justify such a decision in accordance with legal requirements.

“Cannot finance the war”

The senators remind that lawmakers clearly formulated their position: the United States should not import Russian oil while the aggressor country continues its attacks on Ukraine and does not remove threats against NATO allies.

«Сполучені Штати не повинні надавати путіну фінансовий рятівний круг, поки росія продовжує вбивати українських цивільних. Адміністрація має негайно змінити курс» (The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The administration must immediately change course).

The politicians demand that Trump revoke the waiver for Russian fuel imports.

Who signed the appeal

The text of the statement was published by the press office of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Among the signatories are Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and six other senators from both parties:

  • Susan Collins — Republican from Maine;
  • Richard Blumenthal — Democrat from Connecticut;
  • Lisa Murkowski — Republican from Alaska;
  • Ron Wyden — Democrat from Oregon;
  • Tom Tillis — Republican from North Carolina;
  • John Curtis — Republican from Utah.
