Musician to speak at UN again at Russia's invitation

Roger Waters, the renowned musician and co-founder of the legendary band Pink Floyd, is set to deliver a statement at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine. His participation in the event has become possible thanks to an invitation from the Russian Federation.

Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, confirmed the information regarding the musician's invitation. He also stated that in February 2025, the Security Council will hold two meetings on issues concerning Ukraine.

Meetings on Ukraine: two approaches

One of the meetings, scheduled for 17 February, has been initiated by Russia and will be dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 2202, which endorsed the Minsk Agreements. On this day, the parties will discuss issues related to the implementation of these measures.

In addition, another meeting will take place on 24 February, organised at the request of Western countries. Polyansky noted that Western states are striving to "not let the world forget about Ukraine" and to continue discussing the issue on the international agenda.

Roger Waters at the UN: the musician's stance

Roger Waters is not new to speaking at such forums. In February 2023, he already participated in a UN Security Council meeting, where he called on Russia, Ukraine, the US, NATO and the EU to change course and reach an agreement on a ceasefire. In his speech, he condemned the war in Ukraine but noted that it "was not unprovoked", highlighting the complexity and multifaceted nature of the conflict.
