Results of a new social survey
Journalists presented data from a fresh study conducted by Messina Group (TMG). The key finding was that approximately 49% of UK voters are ready to support an initiative for the country to rejoin the European Union.
Government stance and possible steps
Prime Minister Andy Burnham was among the first to voice the idea of returning to the European Union and continues to actively promote it. Given the current situation, it is not excluded that he will soon propose holding a new referendum with the aim of returning the country to the bloc.
Attitudes towards different forms of cooperation
A detailed analysis of respondents' answers reveals the following picture:
- 49% support full re-entry into the EU, while 28.5% are against it. A further third of citizens believe that a separate referendum is necessary before making such a decision.
- 48.2% of those polled support maintaining current relations with the bloc, but with the maximum removal of trade barriers (against — 20.9%).
- 47.1% of respondents support joining the customs union, while 20.7% are against this option.
- 45.1% approve of joining the single market, and 45.5% support associated membership.
- 42% of those polled are ready to maintain the current format of relations.
Meanwhile, only 27.9% of respondents support the idea of further distancing the UK from the EU. 41.2% are against such a scenario.
Assessment of Brexit and desired timelines
Regarding the timing of a possible return to the European Union, 25.9% of those polled would like this to happen immediately. A further 22.9% consider the optimal period to be within the next three years, while 8.4% prefer within the next decade.
The study also shows that 52.4% of Britons consider the decision to leave the European Union a mistake. 29.7% hold the opposite view, while 17.9% could not make up their minds.
Regarding the overall assessment of Brexit itself, 54.9% called it a failure, while 12.2% consider it a success. A further 23.2% were undecided, and 9.7% answered that they did not know.
