Activist links linguistic concessions to security threats

Language activist Larysa Nytsay publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the Verkhovna Rada's intention to adopt a document providing for the expansion of the rights of the Hungarian national minority. In her post, she claims that any concessions to Budapest in the education sector could become the first step towards territorial separatism and, as a consequence, an armed conflict.

Warning of a future military clash

Nytsay addressed the MPs with sharp criticism, stating that their decision would have far-reaching consequences. «Через 10 років, коли ваші діти підуть на війну з Угорщиною, і ви скажете: “ой”, поверніться до цього посту ще раз. Майбутні постріли по ваших дітях у новій війні з угорського боку — це ціна вашого сьогоднішнього рішення поступитися Угорщині в питанні мови в освіті. Віддали світогляд наших дітей угорцям. Щоб українці на українській землі росли угорцями» (In 10 years, when your children go to war with Hungary, and you say: "oh", come back to this post again. Future shots at your children in a new war from the Hungarian side — that is the price of your today's decision to concede to Hungary on the issue of language in education. We handed over the worldview of our children to the Hungarians. So that Ukrainians on Ukrainian soil grow up as Hungarians), the activist emphasised.

The situation in Zakarpattia as an example of separatism

According to Nytsay, on a part of Ukrainian territory which, in her claim, is under Hungarian control, «мовний сепаратизм» (linguistic separatism) is already being observed. This likely refers to the Zakarpattia region. She is convinced that such a process inevitably leads to escalation: «мовний сепаратизм завжди призводить до територіального сепаратизму. А територіальний сепаратизм призводить до війни» (Linguistic separatism always leads to territorial separatism. And territorial separatism leads to war).
