Critical condition of the patient
Efforts to save the life of 50-year-old Christy Pike are ongoing at a Nashville hospital. According to Reuters, she is in critical condition following an incident during an attempted execution.
The day before, the convicted woman was scheduled to be executed by pentobarbital injection. However, two consecutive attempts failed, after which Pike was hospitalised.
Tennessee authorities' reaction
The state's Governor, Bill Lee, decided to suspend all executions planned for this year. He also ordered an independent review of the circumstances preceding the incident.
UN position
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk commented on the situation, stating that this case is an argument in favour of abolishing the death penalty in those US states where it is still in effect.
“Prolonged physical and psychological suffering caused by numerous failed execution attempts is abhorrent and cruel,” Türk emphasised.
Circumstances of the case
Christy Pike received her sentence in 1995. At the time, the 18-year-old student, together with her boyfriend Tadarri Shipps and another accomplice, lured her 19-year-old classmate Collin Slemmer into a forest. There, the victim was tortured and killed.
