The Russian army has begun using a new cruise missile, the "Filin", against Ukraine, with a range reaching 1,200 kilometres. The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine analysed the construction of this weapon and found dozens of foreign-made components in its electronics, specifically from the US and China.

According to intelligence data, the first use of the "Filin" by Russian forces occurred in late summer 2026. The missile is manufactured by the Russian enterprise "NPO Molniya", which is part of the "Tactical Missile Weapons" corporation.

The GUR emphasises that the development of the "Filin" fits into the general strategy of the Russian military-industrial complex, which involves creating relatively cheap air attack means equipped with jet engines.

Technical parameters and construction

Ukrainian intelligence established that the missile body is made of composite materials, including carbon fibre and glass fibre. Some parts are produced using 3D printing technologies.

The dimensions of the "Filin": length — 3.5 metres, wingspan — 3 metres. The maximum take-off weight is 210 kilograms.

According to the Russian side, the missile can accelerate to 800 km/h. The flight range varies from 600 to 1,200 kilometres. The weapon can operate at very low altitudes as well as at heights up to 6 kilometres.

Two modifications of the missile are provided for, with warhead weights of 50 or 100 kilograms. Launch is carried out from a ground launch installation using a powder accelerator.

Foreign components in electronics

During the examination of the "Filin" construction, GUR specialists established that the onboard equipment is manufactured by the Russian company "PLAZ". This same enterprise is involved in the creation of "Harpy" drones, which are a modification of "Geran-2" type strike drones.

Experts noted that certain blocks of the "Filin" and "Harpy" have a common construction and marking. For missile guidance, a Chinese-made inertial navigation system and the 16-channel "Comet" satellite navigation system are used.

Intelligence officers paid particular attention to the presence of foreign electronics. In the examined components, 35 elements of American manufacture and 22 Chinese ones were found.

The GUR stresses that the share of Chinese parts has increased in the new Russian missile. Meanwhile, manufacturers continue to use unified technical solutions that are applied in other types of Russian weaponry.

Engine and further research

Unlike the electronics, the "Filin" jet engine is of Russian origin. This refers to the R500 turbojet engine, manufactured by the company "Reynolds".

According to GUR data, similar engines were previously detected in other Russian cruise missiles, specifically the S-71K "Kover" and S-71M "Monokhrom".

Ukrainian intelligence published an interactive 3D model of the "Filin", a list of its components, and information about the manufacturers of electronic components.

The GUR emphasises that it continues to study new developments of the Russian military-industrial complex in order to identify the enterprises and supply chains that ensure the production of weapons for the war against Ukraine.
