Explosion in central Bangkok

An explosion rocked the Thai capital today. Preliminary data suggests it was a terrorist act.

The blast occurred in central Bangkok, an area always crowded with tourists from various countries, near the local landmark – the statue of Brahma at the Erawan Shrine.

This is effectively the main road of the city's commercial district. Three large shopping centres are located in this area. Several thousand tourists and pilgrims visit the district daily.

Preliminary data indicates that at least 15 people were killed in the terrorist attack, while more than 80 others sustained injuries of varying severity.

Despite the long-standing tense situation in the country, such incidents are rare in Bangkok.
