Powerful earthquake strikes Tibet

Tibet has been hit by a destructive magnitude 7 earthquake, which has claimed the lives of at least 53 people. More than 60 residents have sustained injuries of varying severity.

Wide geographical reach

Strong tremors were felt not only in Tibet but also in neighbouring countries — Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities do not rule out an increase in the death toll as information arrives from remote areas. Infrastructure in the disaster zone has been severely damaged, complicating access to those affected.
