In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu 100 cetaceans washed ashore. Of these, 20 short-finned pilot whales died, while authorities hope to save the remaining 80.

According to one Indian official, the mammals are disoriented. They have not previously washed ashore in such large numbers.

The Forest Department and the administration of the marine park in Palk Bay are investigating the incident. The causes remain a mystery to them for now.

Short-finned pilot whales are mammals of the dolphin family, order Cetacea. Their behaviour more closely resembles that of whales.
