Voice of America launches investigations into journalists who criticised Trump

The management of the Voice of America media corporation has initiated internal investigations into employees who voiced criticism of US President Donald Trump. According to The New York Times, the first to come under fire was one of the publication’s most prominent journalists, Stephen German.

“Extended leave” for unknown reasons

On 28 February, it was reported that German had been sent on so-called “extended leave for valid reasons”. The journalist himself confirmed the information, clarifying that he had received an official notice of the start of an investigation into his activities. However, the details of the review and its grounds remain unknown for now.

White House bureau chief sidelined

Long-time head of Voice of America’s White House bureau, Petsy Vidakuswara, was also affected by the changes. According to sources, she was informed on Friday of a forced transfer to another position, which effectively means her removal from her previous duties.

Political pressure or personnel policy?

The decisions by Voice of America’s management have sparked a wave of discussion within the journalistic community. Journalists see this as an instance of censorship and pressure on staff who had not hidden their critical attitude towards Trump’s policies.
