German city offers free beer to voters

The German city of Duisburg has proposed a unique initiative to its residents — free beer in exchange for participation in the upcoming federal elections. The city's mayor explained this step as an effort to boost voter turnout and strengthen democratic processes.

In 2021, during the previous elections, voter turnout in Duisburg stood at 68.1%, significantly lower than the national average of 76.6%. City authorities hope that the new campaign will motivate more citizens to participate in the vote.

For those who prefer to abstain from alcohol, an alternative is provided: non-alcoholic beer or other beverages.
