Germany to ban AfD party

German Social Democratic Party (SPD) MP Carmen Wegge, together with a cross-party group, has initiated the process to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This was reported by Die Zeit.

The issue is scheduled to be discussed in the Bundestag next week. If the initiative is approved, it will be referred to the Federal Constitutional Court, located in Karlsruhe, for review.

Banning a political party in Germany is a complex process that requires substantial grounds. According to legislation, such a decision requires proof that the party's activities pose a threat to the foundations of the country's democratic order.

Despite the MPs' actions, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who represents the same SPD, expressed his disagreement with the initiative to ban the AfD. He emphasised that, although the party actively criticises the government, it will remain one of the competitors in the upcoming parliamentary elections, which will take place in February.
