Under the legislation, this is set to happen on 19 January 2025, unless its Chinese owner ByteDance sells the business to a US company. The decision sparked fierce debate in society and heightened tensions in relations between the US and China.
Irony of fate: TikTok as inauguration sponsor
Notably, on the day the ban takes effect, Donald Trump will hold an inauguration party. However, an unexpected twist is that the main sponsor of the event will be TikTok itself — the platform he actively campaigned against during his previous presidential term.

Trump’s inauguration is expected to take place indoors rather than outside. The reason is an adverse weather forecast, prompting organisers to move the event under a roof.
