Trial of suspect in the murder of Iryna Fariyon

The National Police of Ukraine announced that the case file regarding the murder of Iryna Fariyon has been sent to court. An 18-year-old resident of Dnipro has been charged under several articles: intentional murder connected with the victim's performance of civic duty, a crime motivated by national intolerance, and illegal possession of firearms.

Motive for the crime

According to the investigation, the accused believed that "national discrimination of Russian-speaking citizens" exists in Ukraine. He directed his hatred towards Iryna Fariyon, who is known for her active stance in defence of the Ukrainian language and culture. According to the investigation's version, the young man considered her actions a "threat to national unity," which prompted him to plan the crime.

Preventive measures

The accused is in custody without the right to bail, and the detention period has been extended until 12 January 2025.

Possible punishment

If found guilty, the young man faces a life sentence.
