Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians' documents exposed in open access

Hundreds of thousands of personal documents belonging to Ukrainians have been compromised in a data breach from Ukrainian traffic police databases, The Kyiv Independent reports. The cause of the incident was weak cybersecurity, which allowed access to passport scans, driving licences, taxpayer numbers and vehicle registrations.

Documents were accessible for over four years

The data remained unprotected and unencrypted from early 2021 to March 2025. Throughout this entire period, it was stored on a server of one of the world's largest cloud storage providers, further exacerbating the situation.

Potential risks and threats to citizens

The scale of the breach is causing concern among security experts, as such data could be used for fraud, identity theft and other criminal activities.
