Maya Plisetskaia dies

Today, 2 May, in Germany, the renowned ballerina Maya Plisetskaia died of a heart attack, six months short of her 90th birthday.

The tragic news was announced by Vladimir Urin, General Director of the Bolshoi Theatre.

According to Urin, Plisetskaia’s husband, Rodion Shchedrin, called him. He reported that the ballerina had suffered a severe heart attack.

Maya Plisetskaia was hospitalised in one of Germany’s clinics, where doctors desperately fought to save her life. However, medicine proved powerless; the ballerina’s heart gave out, and she died without regaining consciousness.

Ballerina Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaia was born on 20 November 1925 in Moscow.
