US plans to withdraw from Paris climate agreement: Trump continues policy of renouncing international climate commitments

US President Donald Trump is once again set to pull the country out of the Paris climate agreement, marking the second such move in his presidential career. A corresponding statement was published by the White House, Reuters reports.

This step reflects Trump’s ongoing scepticism towards the issue of global warming, which he calls a “hoax”. The US President continues to push his policy of reducing environmental regulations for American companies, particularly in the oil and gas sector. The aim is to increase extraction and minimise external oversight of resource companies.

The process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is expected to take up to one year. If this decision is implemented, the US will become one of the few countries to renounce its commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

Alongside Iran, Libya and Yemen, America will be among the countries that have not signed the agreement, which in 2015 became the foundation for the international fight against climate change.

At present, the US ranks second in the world in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, trailing only China. Simultaneously, the country is the world’s largest producer of oil and gas, which also makes the rejection of climate agreements part of a broader strategy to ensure energy independence.
