US planned terror attacks

In the 1960s, the US developed a secret plan to carry out terror attacks on its own territory to justify a war with Cuba. The operation, known as “Northwoods”, included several scenarios, such as the explosion of a US ship in Guantanamo, the arson of aircraft, and attacks on US military bases, all of which were to be blamed on Fidel Castro’s regime.

Additionally, the plan envisaged launching a terror campaign linked to Cuba in Miami, other Florida cities, and Washington. It also involved spreading rumours of alleged aggression by the Cuban government and organising false attacks to provoke a “wave of national outrage”.

This document was signed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff but was rejected by US President John Kennedy.
