US sends warships to Panama

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Hegseth announced the decision to deploy several warships to Panama to bolster regional security. 

This move was prompted by concerns over the growing influence of Chinese companies in Panama, which, in his view, could pose a threat to US national security.

The Chinese threat and the role of the Panama Canal

According to Hegseth’s claims, Chinese companies hold key positions in Panama, which could lead to espionage-related risks in the long term. The Defence Secretary emphasised that the US cannot allow the Panama Canal to be used as an instrument of Chinese influence.

US response to Chinese presence

Hegseth also noted that the US intends to “liberate” the Panama Canal from Chinese influence, preventing China from using the strategically vital facility for its own interests. The US underscores the importance of control over the canal, which is not only a critical transport artery but also a subject of international politics and security.
